Free the Children – Brick by Brick, 2013/2014
The theme for the school year 2013/14 was, “Making a Difference” to create change in our world. We began a school wide campaign, and our goal was to raise enough money to build a school in an underprivileged country; namely, Orngena, Kenya, through the Free the Children fundraising campaign.
We began our journey in September, 2013 with a community project called Cardboardia. Children were given the opportunity to explore the simple pleasure of building a community out of large cardboard boxes. Each class created a different part of the community. Children were then engaged in many different learning opportunities as they used their imagination, and delighted in role-playing activities, using their cardboard creations. Elementary grades also learned about different ways in which we could make a difference in people’s lives around the world. They learned how the Free the Children campaign began with a vision, and mission of a 12 year-old boy, Craig Kielburger, from Thornhill, Ontario. Our students were inspired by this boy’s vision, and how every day, this movement grows, and every day, more young people are free to reach their full potential. North Hill is so proud to be have been part of that movement for change. Our goal was achieved! We raised a total of $10,040.00. This is just a small example of how we can make an impact by putting forth our efforts in organizing fundraisers, and working together for one common goal. We thank all parents and staff for your generosity throughout the year. Together, we made a difference!
“People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”
